First United Methodist Church -- Rockville, Indiana
Opportunities to Serve
Buddy Bags. Buddy bags is a program that supplies food to elementary children do not have enough to eat over the weekend. The group meets in the Fellowship Hall kitchen Thursday at 6:00 pm. They pack the food in individual bags and ready them for transport. Packing takes approximately an hour. A volunteer takes them to the Rockville Elementary School on Friday morning. The school staff places the food in each child's backpack. Contact Larry or Charla Malone for more information.
Fellowship Diner. On the last Friday of each month the church opens its doors to feed the community. Anyone is welcome to come in, eat and fellowship. There are no requirements or restrictions. Opportunities to serve come in many ways at this event. There is a need with people to visit with those who come, many who are just looking for fellowship. Servers, cooks, dishwashers are needed and there may be other tasks to be done as well. To join in the service of this event contact Martha Holaday.
Food Pantry. The church maintains an emergency food pantry. Items collected are Pasta Sauce, pasta,
canned meat, canned vegetables, soup and other non-expired, non-perishable items. You may leave your donations in the office any time the church is open.
Hygiene Closet: We are collecting full-size hygiene items for our "Hygiene Closet", also known as the "Self-Care Cabinet". These items will be used to bless students and families in our community. A cabinet will be set up at Parke Heritage High School and another at Parke Heritage Middle School during the week of October 7th. Items are collected at the church and then dispersed to the schools. Contact Shannon Belcher or Carol Keller for more information. Please consider donating to this important ministry.
Hygiene Closet Needs:
Deodorant/Anti-antiperspirant (Men and Women's), Shampoo, Conditioner, Soap, Body Wash, Toothbrushes, Toothpaste, Mouthwash, Feminine Hygiene Products, Wash Cloths, Towels. Laundry Detergent, Girls Underwear and Socks of all sizes. [Note: travel-size hygiene products are also collected and given to another church for their ministry for the homeless.]
Clothing Closet: We are collecting new and gently used clothing, shoes, coats, hats, mittens/gloves, and blankets for our Clothes Closet. All items will be donated to Parke County children and adults through a Clothes Closet Ministry within our church. If you need help getting your donations to the church, let Shannon Belcher or Randy Randall know! You may also contact Kathy in the office. Donations can be brought whenever the church is open. Office hours are Monday - Thursday from 9am - 1pm. Or, you can drop them off during the Clothes Closet hours, Thursdays from 1-5pm.
Praise Team. The Praise teams leads the music during our Worship Service. They serve in an alternating schedule. If you would like to join your voice in praise with the team contact Carol Milligan.
Greeters. Our Greeters meet those coming for Worship Service on Sunday mornings. They pass out bulletins to our regular attendees. They greet visitors and connect them with a Welcome Volunteer. The Greeters serve on a rotating schedule. You may serve as often or as little as is good for you. Contact Kathy in the office to be put on the schedule.
Welcome Volunteers. These folks invite visitors to sit with them. They guide visitors through the Service, i.e. when to stand, responsive readings and prayers, children's chat, and our visitor offering policy. They also assist the visitors with locations of facilities, such as restrooms, handicap ramp, nursery, and children's church location. At the end of the Service they introduce the visitors to the Pastor.
Covered Bridge Parking. Mark Vanderheyden and the Thirty Six Restaurant has been so kind to allow us the use of their parking lot to park cars for the Covered Bridge Festival. Some people park for an hour and some all day for a $5.00 fee. Please contact Alex or Carol Milligan if you would like to volunteer this year.
Bereavement Dinners: Different people in the congregation have shared the responsibility of organizing the dinners. We appreciate the willingness of those who have been asked to participate as we honor our lost congregants by serving their families. If you can be the one to notify people of the needs and coordinate the dinners it would be greatly appreciated. Please notify the Pastor if this can be your way to serve in the church.
Nursery. We provide a nursery for preschoolers. Volunteers can assist Amanda with the care of these children. The nursery is open from 9:30 to shortly after the Worship service is concluded. See Amanda if you would like to serve in the nursery. See note below
Children's Church. Children's Church is for elementary age children. After the Children's Chat in the Worship Service the children are dismissed to the Children's Church in the lower level. The children are taught a Bible lesson and join in Bible based activities centered on that morning's lesson. Children's Church dismisses at the same time as as the Worship Service. See Martha Holaday if you would like to serve these children. See note below.
NOTE: People serving in mission to children have to apply, and if accepted, undergo Safe Sanctuary training with the Pastor and/or SPRC Chairperson, submit to a background check, and be a minimum of 16 years old.
If the LORD lays on your heart an opportunity to serve we would be excited to discuss it with you and explore the possibility of joining in ministry.
